Business Communication Case Studies
This training involves teaching the appropriate language, training core communication skills, reflecting on the specific business context and applying the learning to that context in order to present a product. This is all about outcomes.
Implementation of SAP software project
A Croatian Oil company needed to produce an implementation plan for SAP software in order to manage their fixed assets. They decided to carry out the project in English as preparation for eventual partnership with a non-Croatian company, a partnership that would be driven by effective communication in English. That partnership has since taken place.
Sharing production capacity over three countries
A Finnish margarine producer was not sharing its production capacity effectively and therefore losing profit margins through sub-contracting capacity whenever there was a surge in demand. The project established a clear policy for internal communication and shared production responsibility from a group rather than a local competing perspective, based on trust and the creation of a co-operative attitude.
Managing construction projects and site visits in English
A global construction company, expanding into central Europe needed to be able to remotely manage construction projects with local building companies, and to be able to prepare and run site visits for key clients from multinational organisations, on whose behalf the construction was being carried out. The project established a glossary of construction-related vocabulary, and a process for site visits.
Maintenance engineer training as part of a major investment
As part of a leasing agreement involving the JAS/Gripen Multi-Role Combat Aircraft, the Swedish Air Force was required to supply a support group to assist in an advisory capacity on the ground in the Czech Republic. Maintenance engineers formed a significant part of this group. The project identified was to enable maintenance engineers to instruct, advise and support maintenance routine training in a diplomatic way. The product was a booklet consisting of simple training templates in English, key vocabulary items, key functions explained and the training involved examining differing approaches to instruction in English.
Supply chain communication
A Swedish multi-national had serious issues of communication along the supply chain resulting in the ordering of too much product because each section felt they could not rely on their colleagues down the line. The end-result was too much stock, which resulted in expensive storage capacity, an inability of the sales team to shift the product and an eventual stock surplus which had to be destroyed or dumped on the market. The project identified was to bring together the supply chain teams to identify and address issues of communication and to agree a common code of practice which they themselves produces, rather than following the unworkable manual they had been presented with. A hands-on solution, produced by the supply team within the supply chain mechanisms, and a real feeling of unity and co-operation as they had worked out the issues themselves, taught, trained and then facilitated by us.
Group rather than local thinking
Young key people from 6 different countries were brought together to focus on group rather than local communication. The project was to establish a group intranet-based competitor information database. Previously, all market knowledge had been local, on paper, and was rarely updated and hardly ever shared. Thus there were two issues. The issue of group rather than local thinking and the issue of generating and sharing live competitor information in order to be able to be proactive in business operations.
European Works Council communication
We have run several projects over several years within the forestry, timber, paper and pulp industry. These projects have been to train Trade Union representatives so they can communicate with management on a regular informal and formal basis with senior management, without relying on simultaneous interpretation. In order to do this, we focussed on key language groups such as Health and Safety, Environmental issues, Finance, and Organisational language plus key communication skills such as meetings and discussions, presenting information and networking. The project allowed the gradual withdrawal of interpreters as the trainees became more competent and confident in English.
